ABOUT THE BURSARY

In 2016 the Dr. EJ Mabuza Scholarship Fund was made to honor Dr. Enos Mabuza and his important contribution to the founding of Thebe Investment Corporation, along with Walter Sisulu, Beyers Naude, and Nelson Mandela. 

The program’s purpose is to help financially disadvantaged college students, which will assist in producing graduates who are proud of their African identity and background, self-assured, able to function both academically and socially, and with the understanding and abilities necessary to pursue careers in their fields. 

Tuition, textbooks, living costs (or certified housing costs), meals, and transportation expenses (for students residing at home) are all covered by the bursary. At every level of the program, the Thebe Foundation offers support services to ensure that all grantees get the assistance they need to succeed academically and graduate from college.

 

We are offering bursaries in the following fields of study:

  • Accounting and Corporate Finance
  • Finance 
  • Mining Engineering and Electrical Engineering 
  • Agriculture 
  • Education/BEd: specializing specializing mathematics and Technology  
  • Renewable energy water, and energy  
  • ICT 
  • Artisan Skills Programs, e.g, Electricians, plumbers, mechanics, Solar voltaic service technicians, millwrights,  
  • Media Information and Communication programs 

FOR YOU TO QUALIFY, YOU SHOULD HAVE:

  • Candidates must be under 35 years of age, be South African citizens, and be employed and pursuing a full-time qualification (diploma, advanced diploma, degree, or honors). For master’s and PhD applicants, the research topic will form part of the selection criteria. 
  • candidates must be pursuing their qualification level for the first time (i.e., not repeating a degree, honors, etc)  
  • Acceptable academic record with an average pass rate of 60% and above and household income should be below R600K per year. 
  • Black students (Africans, Coloreds, and Indians) 
  • Candidates must be pursuing a qualification or planning to pursue a qualification at a public tertiary institution registered with DHET and SAQA. (This includes community colleges and Technical Vocational education.)  
  • The bursary will be given to students who have registered in bachelor or diploma programs majoring in the following courses at public tertiary institutions:

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

Please prepare the following documents:

  • All Applicants:
    • A one-page statement or motivation sets out why you have selected your field of study and how you plan to use it after graduation.
    • A certified copy of a valid South African identity document and recently certified parents or guardians’ valid South African ID (or death certificate if deceased)
    • Proof of household income (certified copy of SASSA documents or 3 months pay stubs of parents or guardians) and please attach affidavits confirming unemployment if parents are not working.
    • Most importantly, all certified documents must be less than 3 months old. 
    • If you have numerous documents for one submission, please merge or scan them into one  file that you can upload.

 

  • Scholar in Matric

 

    • Grade 11 and 12-Term-2 Report (stamped): With the official school stamp

 

  • Gap Year Student
    • Certified copy of valid matriculation certificate or (Grade 12)

 

  • Undergrad/Honours/ Masters/Doctoral
    • 2023 Official Proof of Registration at the University (for the 2023 academic year): It must be an official document from the university
    • Certified copy of the latest Official academic transcript (combined document required for applicants that have registered at multiple institutions during their tertiary studies)

 

  • Optional Docs
  • Disability? Dept of Labor Employment Equity Act (EEA1) Form AND a Doctor’s Letter 
  • Did you get funded by another bursary or NSFAS before? Upload your bursary agreement, letter, or offer
  • A copy of the 2024 acceptance letter from an accredited institution. Official letter showing you’ve been accepted (even provisionally) to study the qualification in 2024
